The EU Commission has presented proposals for a directive which would force member states to restructure their car taxation systems.

They include the scrapping of registration taxes such as VRT in Ireland.

The commission said it wanted to remove existing tax obstacles to the transfer of cars from one member country to another.

It proposes the removal of car registration taxes over a period of five to ten years.
