CRH confirms polish charity donation

Cement group CRH has confirmed that it has made a donation of €125,000 to a charity fronted by the wife of the Polish President.

But a spokesman for the group has stressed the payment was fully above board and was publicised when it was made in 1997.

Poland is holding a major inquiry into the privatisation of state companies.

In the course of the parliamentary hearings the wife of the Polish president was questioned about a donation to a charity she founded from the Irish group.

She rejected that there was any connection between the takeover of a cement plant by CRH and the donation.

Today a spokesman for CRH said the contribution had been launched and publicised in Polish newspapers when it was made.

He added the cement group makes charitable contributions in all the countries in which it operates.

The issue has come to light after publicity of an allegation that a Polish businessman paid a $1m bribe on behalf of CRH in relation to the take over of the Ozarow cement plant.

The company has questioned whether the claim was ever made.

It also denies making any payment.
