New mayors for Cork, Dublin and Limerick

Three Fine Gael mayors have been elected to offices in Cork, Limerick and Dublin.

Deirdre Clune of Fine Gael has become the 68th Lord Mayor of Cork.

She has become the third generation of her family to wear the mayoral chain, following in the footsteps of her father, Peter Barry, and grandfather, Anthony Barry.

The mother of four, who is a civil engineer by profession, was first elected to Cork City Council six years ago.

Ms Clune served as a TD for Cork South Central from 1997 to 2002.

Meanwhile, Fine Gael Councillor Catherine Byrne has been elected Lord Mayor of Dublin.

She is the fifth woman to be Lord Mayor of Dublin City. Ms Byrne won tonight's contest by a single vote.

Fine Gael Councillor Dermot Scully has been elected Mayor of Limerick after a dramatic turn of events at tonight's meeting of Limerick City Council.

Mr Scully was nominated, not by his own party, but by Independent Councillor John Gilligan.

Councillor Maria Byrne was the Fine Gael candidate for the office of mayor, but she was beaten when Councillor Scully voted for himself along with six Independents and two Fianna Fáil councillors.

There had been a pact between Fine Gael and Labour that the mayorship would rotate between the two parties for the next five years.
