Dublin Airport says there is no immediate threat to flights amid a row at the airport over the appointment of staff to strengthen security.

Shop stewards representing 600 security workers at the airport are meeting this morning over the appointment of new passenger screening staff.

The airport's security was strongly criticised following an EU inspection earlier this year.

The Dublin Airport Authority wants to appoint 13 new supervisors to improve screening services. SIPTU has accused the DAA of trying to make the appointments without complying with existing union agreements.

It is understood that a ballot for industrial action may be considered.

In another development, airport management has introduced a measure aimed at reducing delays for domestic passengers.

A new passenger security screening channel opens at the airport today for people flying from Dublin to other airports around Ireland.

The DAA says it is needed because Irish flights in Ireland have been most affected by the new security measures.
