Heavy rain yesterday led to flooding in parts of northern England, making some roads impassable and cutting off villages.

The worst hit area was around the market town of Helmsley in North Yorkshire, where a river burst its banks.

RAF helicopters airlifted nine people to safety from trees, cars and roofs.

The damage caused by the flooding will cost tens of millions of pounds to repair, estimate insurers.
