According to reports, 50 militants have been killed at the start of a major US-led military operation against rebels in Iraq’s Anbar province. A further 100 militants are reported captured.
Operation Spear, which involves 1,000 troops supported by tanks, is reportedly aimed at flushing out insurgents and foreign fighters along the border with Syria. The operation is continuing.
It follows a week of attacks which left at least 11 American soldiers dead.
Meanwhile, five Iraqis were killed yesterday in a suicide car bombing in Fallujah.
