Charges for around 20,000 residents of public nursing homes and other facilities are to come into force within a month.
Regulations permitting the charges were signed today by the Ministers for Health and Finance.
Nursing home residents who are provided with 24-hour nursing care will pay €120 a week under the scheme.
The regulations reinstate charges and put them on a legal basis for the first time in 29 years.
