A Russian passenger train travelling to Moscow from the separatist republic of Chechnya has been derailed by an explosion.

Officials say 12 people were injured when two carriages of the train left the tracks about 90 miles south of the Russian capital.

One official was quoted as saying the incident was being treated as a suspected act of terrorism.

It is believed that casualties were kept to a minimum because because the bomb was planted at a location where the railway line turns and trains slow down.
