The US has indicated that it will not oppose a third term of office for the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Mohamed ElBaradei, whose second term expires soon.

As head of the UN's nuclear watchdog Mr ElBaradei has clashed with the United States over Iraq's weapons capability and his handling of Iran's nuclear programme.

Last night the US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, said Washington had worked well with Mr ElBaradei in the past and she looked forward to talks with him later today.
