UN concerns over Zimbabwe evictions

A United Nations expert has said the forced eviction of thousands of people from the Zimbabwean capital, Harare, may have been politically motivated.

Miloon Kothari, who is the UN's Special Rapporteur on Adequate Housing, suggested that opposition voters may have been targeted for eviction.

Zimbabwe's government said the action was intended to combat urban crime.

But Mr Kothari said police had removed as many as 150,000 people from their homes in shanty towns in Harare and across the country in the past few weeks.
