Britain is calling on the world's richest nations to cancel all African debt as part of a package of proposals to boost the continent's development.
Speaking ahead of next month's G8 summit in Scotland, Britain's Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown, reaffirmed the British government's determination to make Africa's problems the central issue of its presidency of the G8.
Mr Brown said he would put the plans to write off the debt to G8 leaders at next month’s summit.
‘This is not a time for timidity nor a time to fear reaching too high,’ said Mr Brown. ‘This year ... is our chance to reverse the fortunes of a continent and to help transform the lives of millions’.
