Cullen warning over competing terminals

Dublin Airport - Dispute over second terminal
Dublin Airport - Dispute over second terminal

The row between the Government parties over a second terminal at Dublin Airport took a new twist today.

The Minister for Transport, Martin Cullen, insisted that there was no example anywhere in the world of competing terminals at the same airport.

He told the Dáil that landing charges could rise significantly if such a terminal were built.

Mr Cullen said that of the 13 expressions of interest in building a terminal that had been received, only one gave an idea of the landing charges that would be needed to fund such a terminal.

This charge would be €8.50, compared to the present rate of €4.90.

Meanwhile, the Progressive Democrats are insisting that the new facility must compete with the existing terminal.
