Gunmen have kidnapped the governor of Iraq's Anbar province along with four bodyguards on the road from Qaim, near the Syrian border, to Ramadi.

The abduction of Raja Nawaf, who recently became governor of Anbar, home to many of Iraq's insurgents, was reported by his brother Hamed Nawaf.

At least seven people were killed and 16 others injured in one of two suicide car bomb attacks in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, this morning.

In the first attack, the bomber blew up his vehicle close to a US military convoy in the city centre. It is understood all the victims were Iraqis.

The explosion was close to the site of a double suicide car bombing on Saturday that killed 22 people including two Americans.

A few hours later, officials reported that a second suicide bomber detonated his car outside a base for police patrolling the river Tigris situated on the banks of the river.

Police said there were several casualties but it was too early to have precise figures.
