Polls close in Northern elections

Northern Ireland election - Polls closed
Northern Ireland election - Polls closed

Polls closed at 10pm in Northern Ireland's 620 polling stations.

105 candidates are contesting the North's 18 Westminster seats, counting begins at 10am tomorrow, with the first results expected in the afternoon.

In the local government elections, 918 people are contesting 582 council seats.

Ballots for the local government elections will be counted over Monday and Tuesday

Northern voters are facing two different balloting systems. General election ballot papers follow the British tradition of 'first past the post', requiring voters to mark an X against one candidate.

However, local election ballots need a 1, 2, 3 vote to be valid, as those elections are being conducted by proportional representation.

Both the DUP and Sinn Féin are hoping to increase their representation in the London parliament.
