The Sinn Féin President, Gerry Adams, has called for the resignation of Northern Ireland's chief electoral officer, Denis Stanley, amid claims that canvassers who compiled the voter register were biased.

Mr Adams claimed that an Electoral Office report has uncovered possible religious and political discrimination among some canvassers, who may have failed to canvass all households.

He said there was evidence that young people were under-represented on the electoral lists and the registration system had impacted badly in deprived Catholic neighbourhoods.
