Vietnam is marking the 30th anniversary of the end of its long-drawn-out war in which Communist forces from the north triumphed over the US-backed regime in the south.

Tens of thousands of people gathered in Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon, to commemorate the day the communists entered the city.

US troops had withdrawn from Vietnam two years earlier, but Washington supported the South Vietnamese administration until the end.
