Farmers have been continuing round the clock demonstrations outside six major lamb processing plants around the country.

However, negotiations are understood to have begun between management and protestors at some of the plants about the prices farmers are getting for lamb.

The demonstrations over the price of lamb began last Tuesday, with farmers claiming they are losing about €20 per animal.

The plants involved are in Navan, Co Meath, Athleague, Co Roscommon, Kildare Town, Co Kildare, Hacketstown, Co Carlow, Camolin, Co Wexford and Ballyhaunis, Co Mayo.

The Chairman of the IFA Sheep Committee, Laurence Fallon, said prices for lambs and hoggetts had risen in the UK at the end of last week, though demand in France has remained stable.

Mr Fallon said this situation justifies an improved base price here of €4.80 per kg for new season lamb.

The IFA President, John Dillon, complimented sheep farmers for standing up for their rights and accused the factories of trying to undermine prices as well as the confidence and dignity of farmers.
