Airport security - Security checks cause disruption

The Department of Transport and Dublin Airport Authority are examining the possibility of opening additional security points and providing more scanning machines at the airport in a bid to alleviate disruption.

Aer Lingus has said up to 200 of its passengers have missed their flights because of delays caused by new security checks introduced at the airport.

Meanwhile, the country's second largest tour operator has warned that new security arrangements at Dublin Airport could lead to chaotic scenes.

Damien Mooney of Falcon/JWT warned that action needs to be taken before the start of the summer holiday season next weekend.

However, Dublin Airport Authority says that 20 additional staff will be ready to start work at the airport's security points from Sunday.

In total, 60 security screeners are being trained following a security lapse at the airport during an EU security audit earlier this month.

According to Ryanair there were no flight delays this morning at the airport.

Dublin Airport Authority said there were delays of up to 25 minutes on Aer Lingus flights due to security checks.

Flights most affected were those between 5.30am and 7.45am.
