The President of Ecuador, Lucio Gutierrez, has been removed from office by the country's Congress after a week of increasingly violent street protests.

The demonstrations were against what has been described as his dictatorial rule.

The Vice President, Alfredo Palacio, has been installed as the new head of state.

Mr Gutierrez is the third Ecuadorian president to be ousted from office since 1997.

He is currently sheltering in the Brazilian embassy in the Ecuadorian capital.

Brazil has granted his request for political asylum, but his flight out of Quito has yet to be arranged with the new government.

Demonstrators earlier prevented him taking off in his private jet at Quito's main airport.
