Lebanon has named a new prime minister after six weeks without a government.

The moderate pro-Syrian businessman, Najib Mikati, was nominated for the top position with the support of opposition politicians.

Mr Mikati said he was honoured to have been appointed and said his government would be a ‘symbol of moderation and national unity’.

The opposition, which has been demanding greater democracy, opted to name Mr Miqati in order to guarantee that elections are held as planned in May.

The decision came two days after the caretaker prime minister, Omar Karami, resigned for the second time in six weeks after failing to form a government.

Lebanon was plunged into political crisis following the assassination of former Prime Minister, Rafiq Hariri, in February.
