CPSU members - Strike over suspensions

250 Department of Agriculture staff, who were suspended and had their wages cut during a 13-week long dispute in 2003, are to demand the full repayment of the money due to them.

The Civil Public and Services Union says the staff, who work in regional offices in the south and west of the country, are owed an estimated €1.5 million in wages and pension entitlements.

The Department of Agriculture says it is studying the CPSU demand and will issue a statement later today.

The protracted dispute in the spring of 2003 hit the department's offices in Castlebar, Galway, Limerick, Tralee and Clonakilty.

The staff, who were demanding better promotional opportunities within the regions, were suspended when they refused to carry out normal duties.

Workers at the Clonakilty office in Co Cork challenged the department's decision to take them off the payroll and won actions in both the High Court and the Supreme Court.

The CPSU says it will now launch a campaign to have its members' wage deductions repaid in full and their pension entitlements restored.

Financial Secretary Eoin Ronayne says workers had every right to compensation as the courts had ruled the deductions were unlawful.
