Donor countries are reported to have promised to meet in full a request for about €2 billion in aid to help southern Sudan recover from its civil war.

The pledges were made at a conference of 60 donor nations being held in the Norwegian capital, Oslo.

Yesterday the United Nations Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, urged delegates at the gathering to show commitment to the region in the wake of a peace agreement signed in January.

He warned that two million people could face food shortages there in a matter of weeks.
