Syria to withdraw fully from Lebanon

Syria is to withdraw all its troops and intelligence agents from Lebanon by the end of this month.

The news was announced by the senior United Nations envoy for the Middle East, Terje Roed-Larsen, after talks in Damascus with Syria's President, Bashar al-Assad.

Syria has been under strong pressure to end its 29-year-old military presence in Lebanon since the assassination in February of the former Lebanese Prime Minister, Rafik al-Hariri.
