Bank of Ireland said a technical difficulty caused an error to occur on 130,000 transactions last night, which affected 60,000 customers.
Electronic payments made on Tuesday, 29 March were duplicated the following day, instead of payments that should have been processed for that date.
The errors affected both debit and credit payments and the bank said it is reversing the duplicate payments and ensuring that those not processed yesterday are done so.
The bank said in a statement there would be no fees or interest implications for customers as a result of the mix-up and an internal investigation has begun to ensure that the error does not reoccur.
