The World Bank has confirmed that the US Deputy Defence Secretary, Paul Wolfowitz, is be its next President.

The directors of the bank, which represents 184 countries, met in New York to agree on the appointment of its 10th President.

Mr Wolfowitz's appointment has caused controversy because of his central role in the Iraq war and a lack of experience in development issues. He was given EU backing yesterday.
