US announces policy shift towards Iran

The US government has announced a major policy shift towards Iran.

It will drop its opposition to Iran joining the World Trade Organisation to encourage it to abandon its alleged nuclear ambitions.

The move brings the US into line with EU policy of offering economic incentives for Iran's compliance with the nuclear non-proliferation treaty.

The change in policy follows nearly a decade of US opposition to Tehran's attempts to join the WTO.
