Polls have closed in two by-elections in Meath and Kildare North.

Boxes are now being collected and brought to counting centres in Naas and Navan. Counting of votes will be begin at 9am.

Voting improved over the last few hours with a traditional late rush to the polls.

As of 8.30pm, the turnout in Meath was put at around 40%. The turnout in Kells was as high as 50%

In Kildare North turnout is reported to be 37%, however in Clane a higher turnout has been reported.

An evening rush was expected in some parts of both constituencies as commuters/would-be voters made their way home.

The voting is taking place to fill the seats vacated by the former Taoiseach and Fine Gael leader, John Bruton, and the Fianna Fáil Minister, Charlie McCreevy.

65,080 people are registered to vote across 136 polling stations in the Kildare North constituency, while 120,656 are on the register in over 208 polling stations in Meath.

The outcome of the vote will be seen as a test of the Government's popularity after poor results in last year's local elections.
