The Travers Report into how civil servants and ministers at the Department of Health dealt with the nursing home charges issue has been given to the Tánaiste & Minister for Health, Mary Harney.

The 150-page report is to be presented to the Cabinet next week and will be published on Tuesday. The report was drafted by former Forfás head John Travers.

Copies of the report are being given, this evening, to the Taoiseach, Mr Ahern and some former health ministers including Micheál Martin and Brian Cowen. A copy of the report is also to go to the Attorney General.

A spokesperson for Mary Harney said that the Tánaiste would be studying the report over the weekend.

The Labour Party said this evening that the report must identify the administrative and political responsibility for the affair.

As many as 300,000 people were illegally charged for nursing home care since 1976, despite holding medical cards.

According to newspaper reports this morning, about 6,000 patients who were treated in acute rehabilitation units were also wrongly charged.

The Health Service Executive last night admitted its error in charging medical card holders the fee, and said it was an oversight on the part of health service managers.
