It has been revealed that LUAS trams in Dublin were involved in 22 road accidents involving other road vehicles during their first six months in operation.
Figures released to RTÉ News under the Freedom of Information Act show that trams running on the Red Line from Connolly Station to Tallaght have been involved in 18 accidents during the line's first three months in operation.
In comparison, trams operating on the Green Line from St Stephen's Green to Sandyford have been involved in just four accidents during their first six months.
Progressive Democrats spokesman Senator Tom Morrissey has called on the RPA to radically improve the number and visibility of warning signs along the Luas Red Line.
Senator Morrissey expressed particular concern about the Smithfield area which he says has been the scene of a large proportion of incidents over the last three months.
He said signage in the area was 'woefully inadequate'.
Red Line service back to normal
Meanwhile, services on the Red Line are back to normal today after a crash last night left five people slightly injured.
A tram was involved in a collision with an articulated lorry at Queen Street junction in the Smithfield area.
Both the LUAS driver and the truck driver were treated for shock at the scene of the accident, which caused the tram to derail.
For some time afterwards services only ran between Tallaght and Blackhorse.
