The State's nuclear watchdog has warned that the public is far too complacent about the cancer-causing radon gas, which is estimated to kill more than 200 people every year.
The Radiological Protection Institute is beginning an information campaign today on the dangers associated with Radon.
New research by tnsMRBI has found that while 76% of all Irish people are aware of radon gas it is not translating into action.
The RPI says 250,000 people are exposed to the gas and that the public is still not buying detection kits despite the fact that they are not expensive.
Radon is a colourless, odourless and tasteless radioactive gas. It occurs naturally from the decay of uranium in rocks and soils.
It only becomes a problem when it is trapped in the basement of houses and then, by leaking through the floorboards, can cause lung cancer.
