There has been a mixed reaction in Limerick to a new CAO type Secondary school application system, introduced after some children were unable to find a place in any city school last year.
A first public round of offers was made today but it is believed that more than 80 children got letters of rejection.
Under the new procedure every sixth class pupil in the city was asked to fill in a common application form listing their first five school preferences.
Schools still use their enrolment policies to decide who they will take but they have been co-operating in a centralised process overseen by the local education centre. Today letters were posted out.
It is too early to have a definitive view of how the process is working but city children who applied to local schools appear to have been accommodated. This was where the problem lay in previous years.
Those not offered places appear to be mostly children from the city suburbs or beyond. The Education Centre has stressed that today is just one round in a process.
They say the will is there to ensure that they will be placed in subsequent rounds.
