Fishing - Protest in Galway

Fishermen from Kilmore Quay fishing port in Co Wexford have been protesting outside the National Fisheries Exhibition in Co Galway.

They are demonstrating against Department of Marine policies which they say will destroy their livelihoods and devastate the Kilmore region.

The fishermen are angry that the Department's fishing plan for scallop fishery only provides for three boats to remain fishing in Kilmore.

18 are currently fishing in the region, which is the biggest scallop fishing area in the country.

A delegation of fishermen is demanding a meeting with the Marine Department minister, Pat the Cope Gallagher.

They say the minister has been refusing to meet them on the issue.

They argue that Department officials have made major mistakes in the plan they agreed with the EU, which fishermen say will cost at least 100 jobs in Kilmore.

Today's protest followed a demonstration by the fishermen last night at Kilmore Port.

The fishermen's action is being supported by Fine Gael. The party's Marine Spokesman, John Perry, said that the Department had not taken into account the expansion of the Kilmore fleet.
