Marine Minister Pat the Cope Gallagher has welcomed the introduction of new safeguard measures by the EU Commission that will help to protect Irish farmed salmon sales within the EU market.
The measures involve a Minimum Import Price of €2.70 for whole fish until 15 April 2005 and a floor price of €2.85, which will apply from 16 April to 13 August 2008.
These measures will be supported by a tariff quota with an additional duty applying above the permitted import volume.
A review/monitoring system has been put in place at EU level to oversee the operation of the measures.
