The US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, has said Russia must do more to demonstrate that it is committed to the 'basics of democracy' if it wants deeper relations with the west.
Ms Rice was speaking in Warsaw on the latest leg of her visit to Europe and the Middle East.
She said Russia had to make clear its commitment to strengthening the rule of law, strengthening the role of an independent judiciary and permitting a free and independent press.
She is now travelling to the Turkish capital, Ankara, where she will meet the Russian foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov.
