The US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, has said a pre-emptive military attack on Iran was not imminent.

Ms Rice arrived in Germany this evening for talks with the German Chancellor, Gerhard  Schroeder, on the second leg of a tour of Europe and the Middle East.

The US Secretary of State held talks in London earlier today with the British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, and Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw.

Ms Rice said the US would use diplomacy to deal with Iran's nuclear programme.

The Bush administration is thought to be keen to build bridges with European allies after disagreements over the war in Iraq.

Ms Rice is scheduled to visit London, Paris and Berlin as well as the Middle East during her first overseas visit since she was formally appointed to the post.

Ms Rice has separate meetings on Sunday and Monday with the Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, and the Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas.
