The US Senator and former first lady, Hillary Clinton, collapsed while giving a speech in Buffalo in New York today.

Mrs Clinton had just started her address to the local chamber of commerce when she fainted.

The senator's office confirmed that the 57-year-old received medical attention at the scene and did not need to be taken to hospital.

She subsequently resumed her itinerary, making another speech at a Catholic college in Buffalo.

The senator is widely seen as a leading candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008.
