The Palestinian leader, Mahmoud Abbas, is on his first foreign tour since he was elected to succeed Yasser Arafat earlier this month.
He is visiting Jordan and Egypt before heading off to Russia, one of the sponsors of the Middle East process.
During the visits, he is expected to rally international support for his efforts to restart talks with Israel.
