The Revenue Commissioners have said they have repaid a total of €306m to PAYE taxpayers who were overcharged in 2003. 

The information emerged in a question from Fine Gael TD Phil Hogan to the Minister for Finance, Brian Cowen. 

17% of PAYE taxpayers applied for a balancing statement from the Revenue. 

Three quarters of those who applied received a refund, averaging €141.
