IFA rebuts Sugar Co report

The Irish Farmers Association has rejected a suggestion that the decision to close the Carlow sugar factory was 'privately accepted' by the organisation as the right move.

The Nationalist newspaper in Carlow this week quotes an opinion in a memo to the Irish Sugar company from a public relations company which suggested that, in private, the IFA accepted that the closure decision was correct but that the organisation would have to be seen to react, and do a bit of posturing.

However tonight, the Carlow IFA Chairman, John Kehoe, said the claim was blatantly untrue and unsubstantiated. He warned Greencore not to underestimate the anger in Carlow and the entire southeast over their devastating decision to shut the Carlow factory.

John Kehoe predicted a strong turnout next Tuesday at a protest by farmers, workers, hauliers and local businesses rejecting Greencore's closure of the Carlow plant.

Mr Kehoe said it is clear that Greencore is feeling the heat in Carlow and across the country for pulling the plug on the factory and the entire community after 80 years and for undermining Ireland's negotiating position on the EU sugar reform.

He said farmers, workers and the community can see through the spin and propaganda coming from Greencore.
