Almost €48m has been raised by the Irish public for the victims of the Asian tsunami disaster.

The Government has pledged a further €20m.

The aid agency, Trócaire, alone estimates it has raised €15m at church gate collections last Sunday week.

In a separate development, four of the main Irish charities fundraising for the Asian region now say they are winding down their fundraising campaigns.

Meanwhile, the death toll from the tsunami disaster continues to rise. The overall figure has now passed 175,000 after Sri Lanka raised its toll by 7,275 to over 38,000.

It comes as the Swedish Prime Minister, Goran Persson, and his Norwegian and Finnish counterparts visit Thailand, where half of the victims of the disaster are thought to have been foreign tourists.
