At least 18 killed in violence in Iraq

A car bomb has exploded at a police headquarters in northern Iraq, and at least ten people have been killed.

The blast happened in the city of Baiji.

Earlier, eight Iraqis, seven of them soldiers, were killed in a gun and grenade attack on a checkpoint near the town of Baquba.

According to Iraqi security sources, insurgents fired on the Iraqi National Guard checkpoint at 3am this morning.

A local doctor said that the dead soldiers' bodies were brought to a hospital in the town.
