Croatia's pro-Western president, Stjepan Mesic, has overwhelmingly won a second five-year term in office.
Election officials said he won two thirds of the vote, twice as many as his opponent, the deputy prime minister Jadranka Kosor, from the governing conservative party.
In his victory speech, Mr Mesic said Croatian democracy had confirmed itself in yesterday's vote.
But he warned the country must remain united if it wanted to achieve its ultimate goal of joining the European Union.
Croatia is due to start EU accession talks in March with a view to becoming a member in 2009.
