The government of Sudan has signed a preliminary peace agreement with the opposition umbrella group, the National Democratic Alliance, in Cairo.
The document, signed yesterday evening, brings to an end 16 years of conflict and represents a framework for a comprehensive political solution between the two sides.
A finalised peace agreement is due to be signed by both parties in February.
