US force abandons search for WMD

The US force that scoured Iraq for weapons of mass destruction - the stated pretext for the US-led invasion - has abandoned its search to assist instead in counter insurgency efforts.

US officials say the 1,700-strong Iraq Survey Group, responsible for the search, wrapped up physical searches for weapons of mass destruction last month.

Its mission has been refocused on gathering information to help US forces in Iraq win a guerrilla war.
