UK solider in court on Iraqi abuse charges

A British soldier has appeared before a military court in Germany for alleged torture of prisoners near Basra in Iraq.

Private Gary Bartlam is the first of four soldiers from the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers to face a court martial on such charges.

Hearings for the other three members will take place on Wednesday.

The 19-year-old soldier was arrested in Britain 18 months ago at a film photo processing shop in Staffordshire.

Concerned staff at the shop contacted police about the 'trophy' snaps which depicted acts of torture inflicted on Iraqi prisoners. The hearing is expected to last two days.
