A housing estate in Ballinasloe, Co Galway, was evacuated tonight after a river burst its banks causing severe flooding.
Residents in Portnick Drive on the Shannon Bridge Road in the town have been asked to leave their homes.
Gardaí and emergency services were at the scene.
Earlier, there were reports of severe flooding in the village of Foynes in Co Limerick.
Motorists were urged to avoid the area if possible.
In the South-East, at least two roads in north Wexford near Gorey and between Inch and Castletown were temporarily closed due to fallen trees.
In Kilkenny, heavy lifting gear had to be used to clear a tree from the Ballycallen road. The road between Ballyhale and Knocktopher was also closed for a time due to a fallen tree.
Met Éireann had earlier issued severe weather warnings for this evening and tonight.
It is thought up to two inches of rain could fall in places. Met Éireann expects the southern half of Ireland to be worst affected by this, with a risk of flooding in coastal areas as well.
It also says that it will be extremely windy with severe south to southwest winds in the south and east tonight.
It has predicted gusts as strong as 75 to 85mph at times with particularly strong winds expected in Leinster.
Weather experts expect these to continue overnight especially in the north, south and east of Ireland.
