Hospital beds - Shortage causes cancellations

Wexford General Hospital has said that elective surgery has been cancelled until further notice.

A hospital spokesperson said there were 17 patients on trolleys.

Dr Paddy McKiernan, a consultant physician and medical clinical director at the hospital, says the problem is continuing to worsen.

He says that although they were promised that 19 beds would be fast-tracked for Wexford General Hospital over three and a half years ago, nothing has happened.

Four awaiting beds in Letterkenny hospital

Some elective surgery due to take place in Letterkenny General Hospital has been cancelled because of overcrowding in the hospital's Accident and Emergency department.

Yesterday, 28 people were waiting for beds in the A&E unit and outpatient appointments were cancelled.

A spokeswoman for the hospital said the situation was unprecedented at Letterkenny.
