US soldier killed in Afghanistan

A US soldier has been killed and three others wounded in clashes with rebels in eastern Afghanistan.

Rebels had detonated two improvised explosive devices before opening fire on US troops in an attack close to the city of Asadabad, 175 km east of Kabul.

It was the second death of the New Year among an 18,000-strong US force hunting remnants of the Taliban militia and Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda in Afghanistan.

A US soldier died from wounds after being shot by a militant in a raid on a village in the western province of Herat yesterday.
