Irish-born aid worker Margaret Hassan has been posthumously awarded the prestigious Tipperary International Peace Prize.
Mrs Hassan, who had lived and worked in Iraq for more than 30 years, is believed to have been slain by her abductors there late last year.
The Tipperary Peace Convention on Saturday said it had decided to honour Mrs Hassan 'who paid the ultimate price for her dedication to the poor and vulnerable in Iraq'.
She was making her way to her office at CARE International when she was abducted on 19 October last.
Previous recipients of the peace prize include Nelson Mandela, Mikhail Gorbachev, Bill Clinton and Bob Geldof.
The award will be presented to relatives of the 59-year-old during the Tipperary International Festival of Peace in April.
