A sudden squall of wind and heavy rain has caused severe damage to dozens of houses in west Dublin and Co Meath.

The worst affected area was Clonee, where over 100 houses, on the Hansfield, Castaheaney and Hunters Run estates, were damaged.

At least one car was overturned and others had their windows smashed by what local people describe as a mini tornado that swept through the area shortly before 1pm.

Gardaí are advising the public to stay away from the area and residents are being advised to stay indoors in case of further falling slates.

The weather also left 2,000 homes in north Co Dublin without electricity.

The ESB says power has been restored to all but up to 70 homes in the Clonee area. Power to these houses will be out for the night because some line is down and cannot be put up in the dark.

The same squall is thought to have caused a parked Aer Lingus plane at Dublin Airport to be blown into another.

There were no passengers on board and no-one was injured. However, delays were experienced by 600 passengers.
